Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick shamed by text messages

Bernard Kilpatrick, the mayor's father, said Wednesday night he does not think the text messages will pose a major challenge to his son's leadership.

"It's the same old thing," Bernard Kilpatrick said. "It's five years ago. This has been hashed and rehashed.

"He made his peace with his family and with God."

Legal experts said Kilpatrick and Beatty could face perjury charges.

Laurie Levenson, a law professor at Loyola University in Los Angeles, Calif., said the mayor could be charged and possibly convicted of perjury if he lied under oath at the Nelthrope civil trial.

The basic elements of a perjury charge are that a person knowingly lied under oath, Levenson said. An additional element is that the lie was about something that was "material" to the case in which the person was testifying, she said.

Nordstrom shoplifting suspect arrested

A Rodeo woman was arrested on suspicion of grand theft Monday evening after being caught leaving Nordstrom at The Village in Corte Madera with more than $800 in items.

Twin Cities Sgt. Don Hinton said police were notified at 8:24 p.m. after store employees stopped Joann Hamilton, 56, and found a large haul of items including bracelets, shirts, pants, necklaces, head bands, a watch and hair ties.

"All the (items) came up to $802," Hinton said.

Hamilton was booked into the county jail.

Calzaghe: Amir Khan has a long way to go

Last July at the O2 Arena in London, he was properly decked for the first time in his short career by the determined Glaswegian Willie Limond, but got up to win the title in the eighth. He has won impressively twice since, most recently in putting Luton lightweight Graham Earl away in just 72 seconds seven weeks ago in Bolton.

'He had a shaky fight against Limond,' Calzaghe says. 'He was badly hurt and that was a big moment for him. I was really impressed with the way he came back. He showed he has a champion's heart there, but he still has a lot to learn. And he does have tremendously fast hands.

'He's come back a better fighter and he has learnt from that experience. He's still a kid, he's still young and he's still nowhere near how good he's going to be in three or four years' time.

Jilted lover jailed after Swansea house blast

A jilted lover was jailed for three-and-a-half years today after a failed attempt to use his girlfriend's gas stove to blow her up.

Colin Hughes, 45, of Swansea, South Wales, refused to take no for an answer when girlfriend Ann Bowers ended their six-year relationship.

Hughes and Mrs Bowers had got together in 2001 when they were both divorced but the relationship was marred by his alcoholism.

When they split, Hughes broke into her Swansea home and left her kitchen cooker's six gas rings full on, but unlit, a court heard.

The potentially lethal mixture of gas and air could have been sparked by anyone simply switching on a light.

Mrs Bowers came home after an evening at the cinema in August last year and could immediately smell gas.
